Holiday-Centerpiece-How-to-Indian-Corn-Vase

Lisa Hubbard/Woman's Day

Set this candlelit display in the foyer to cast a warm, inviting glow. Indian corn cobs surround a pillar candle in an arrangement that looks simple yet luxe. A heavy-textured velvet ribbon is the perfect touch to tie it all together.

Materials

16 cobs of Indian corn (available seasonally at grocery stores and farmstands)
Sharp kitchen knife
Sixteen 10" wooden barbecue skewers (at grocery stores)
Copper spray paint (we used Krylon Metallic in Copper Finish, from $3.11; Amazon.com)
Pillar candle (ours is 4" x 12")
Cylinder vase (ours is 17" tall)
Hot-glue gun and glue sticks
Twine 2"-wide velvet ribbon (we used 19")

Directions

Step 1 Husk cobs, saving about 32 leaves for later.

Step 2 Using knife, cut off bottoms of cobs so they are flat.

Step 3 Stick skewers into bottom of cobs and use them to hold corn with one hand while spray-painting cobs. Let dry; remove skewers.

Step 4 Place candle in vase and set on a round tray, decorative dinner plate or charger.

Step 5 Hot-glue leaves onto sides of cobs, leaving kernels exposed.

Step 6 Dab a small amount of hot glue onto backs of corn (on kernels, not leaves) and attach vertically to vase, making sure the bottoms are level with the base of the vase and the sides are touching.

Step 7 Wrap twine around center of corn; cover with 2" velvet ribbon and tie in the back.
